Course Description:
This course primarily introduces the theory and computation methods of statistics, as well as their applications in business. The textbook used is “Statistics for Business & Economics (14th Edition) by Anderson et al., 2019, published by Cengage Learning Ltd. (ISBN: 0357114485).” It is supplemented with a Chinese reference book: “Modern Statistics (2nd Edition) by Chen Zhengcang and Lin Huiling, published on July 17, 2020, by Shuangye Bookstore. (ISBN: 9789579096805)”. Topics covered in the this semester included: descriptive statistics, statistical charts, (discrete and continuous) probability distributions, sampling distributions, (point and interval) estimation, hypothesis testing, and so forth. The primary method of instruction is lecture-based. In addition to teaching statistical theory, we will also use R software for calculations of statistical quantities and probability distributions, creating statistical charts, and interpreting test reports. (Note: The weekly course progress and homework requirements will be adjusted according to the actual teaching situation.)
Course Objectives & Learning Outcomes:
The learning objectives of this course are such that upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the following abilities: (1) Understand and explain specific terminologies in statistics. (2) Comprehend the major theories of probability distribution and sampling distribution in statistics. (3) Understand the principles of hypothesis testing and be able to apply them to real-world problems, making statistical inferences. (4) Conduct descriptive statistics, calculate probabilities, execute hypothesis tests, and draw statistical graphs using statistical software. (5) Interpret the implications of reports and charts generated by statistical software.

Teaching Approach:
- Lecture
- E-learning
Evaluation Criteria:
- Quiz (30%): Two quizs
- Midterm exam (30%)
- Final exam (30%)
- Attendance (10%): (有到有分,沒到沒分,不管請假和任何因素)
- Homework (0%)、TA (0%)。
- Bonus exam (extra 20%): R programming, two times, after the midterm exam and final exam。
- Adjustment of scores (up to 10 points): Based on class performance, learning attitude, etc. (Scores will not be adjusted for personal reasons). (Please note that the teacher will not respond to messages or emails requesting for score adjustments at the end of the semester. I appreciate your understanding!)
Notes (in class):
- 上課以「互相尊重、有禮貌」為最高原則,有事請儘早告知老師。
- The highest principle in class is “mutual respect”, and students have the obligation to “inform the teacher” accordingly.
- 上課進行中,請勿聊天嘻笑、請勿竊竊私語、請勿使用手機/平板/筆電發出聲音、請勿配戴耳機。(非常重要)
- You can use smart devices (phone/tablet/notebook) during the class without noise.
- 請假請依照學校規定之程序辦理。(皆需有証明文件)。
- The regulations regarding absences and truancy will be handled according to the school rules.
Notes (exams):
- All four exams will be held during regular class hours (14:10~15:50). Make-up exams are not allowed without a special reason. (Please report any special reasons in advance; if the teacher approves the make-up exam, it should be arranged with the TA within one week). Only one make-up exam is allowed. There is no make-up exam for the R programming bonus test.
- The calculation method for make-up exam scores is: (original score – 60) x 0.7 + 60. For example, if the original score of the make-up exam is 80 points, then the make-up exam score is (80 – 60) x 0.7 + 60 = 74 points. If the original score of the make-up exam is less than 60 points, the original score will be used.
- The exam questions will be in English. The type of questions for each exam are: 4 multiple-choice questions (4 x 5 points), 4 fill-in-the-blank questions (4 x 5 points), 2 short answer questions (2 x 10 points), and 2 calculation questions (2 x 20 points). [NEED MODIFICATION!]
- A score greater than 100 points will be recorded as 100 points, and then multiplied by the percentage corresponding to the score.
- Students caught cheating during the exam will not have any of their current and future exam papers and assignments graded by the teacher. In severe cases, the matter will be reported to the school for further action.
- If you have any questions about your grades, please contact the teacher within one week after the grades are announced.
